Well, there are lots of factors to consider. What type of HSF you are using, how large the case is, how many case fans, what type of ide leads (flat or round), what the ambient air temp is etc. etc.

I guess, a temp of 35-40 degrees C would be about average.

My own 2.5 is overclocked and running as a 3.2XP, I have a fair size case with 6 fans, a Coolermaster HSF (forget the model no) rated for a 3.2, and I run FAD (DC client) which means that the cpu is under 100% load 24/7, my temp is 45.6 degrees C.

general rules say you want to keep it under 50c.
You want it in the 30's to 40's preferably.
I would recomend a good HSF like...
Thermalrights SLK line of heatsinks with a good 80mm fan
Vantec aeroflow
You really should be OK under normal circumstances using a retail version HSF that comes with the retail version CPU.

There's no set rule to the temps. Everybody's trying to get their cpus as cool as possible. Some say to keep it under 40c, some 50c. Mine's (xp1700 palo) running at 48-53c which I feel it's pretty safe. Amd says the max is 85-90c and that's pretty warm.

Bare in mind though that these temps are the maximum the cpu will go without damage. Windows will become unstable at around 60-65, at 70, it would crash!

As a general rule of thumb, you should have the front case fans sucking in, and the back case fans blowing out, if you have a side fan, that should suck in, and if you have a blow hole it should blow out.

Out of curiosity...is that fan configuration the way the case came...Im sure it works fine but is actually the opposite setup of what is most common, ... i.e. usually it is cool air being drawn in from the lower front and expelled from the upper rear.
