Difference between an Athlon XP and MP?
Just wondering... what is the difference between the two? I know that the MP is for workstations, but what is it about the MP that makes it a workstation processor? I read somewhere that you could modify an XP to make it work on dual-processor motherboards. I was wondering if it was just a name issue; the XP isn't meant for dual-processor mobos and it's modified so it won't work in them. Is this true or not?

To work as MP the two cpu's must be very similar. Within certain specs. MP means its within that range and garunteed stable when used as duel. XP even modified is flakey in MP use compaired to the real MP chips. They are also multi unlocked I believe.

XP is the workstation processor, not MP.
MPs cost whole lotta more than XP, for the reasons xtreeme said.

muno: The definition of a workstation for most people is a powerful box with multiple processors, hence terms like Unix Workstation and SparcStation. XPs are for desktop use.
I also read somewhere (when the MPs first came out) that they had 512kb cache. But apparently this was incorrect. Just as an extra note, it is also possible to run Durons and Thunderbirds in SMP mode, but it is not officially accepted, or endorsed - however it has been shown to work.

I didn't know most people thought like that, I thought most people think that there are only workstations and servers.
I know there are professional workstations that are packed with more power, but everything else is workstation...
Desktop, laptop etc. is a different category imo.
This is what I thought most people think, I could be wrong of course.

I thought that too, but I can't find anywhere to back it up anymore. They both run the same core (palomino) and there are now Barton MPs, but I was certain there was something like that about, ie comparing it to the tbirds.
