Have Win NT, 4.0. Cmos Won't Let Me Install.
Recently I purchased Win Nt, 4.0 to install in my old P1 to use as a server for my 2 other computer to be able to Network them, using my Direcway Dish. The Dish is a 2 way, uplink & download. Ran into the problem of the installation of NT after doing the 3 diskette proceedure + the Cd , when I got to the part that told me that Nt won't format a partiton larger than 4 mg. So I did another clean install, this time not allowing fdisk to partition for a normal windows install, like for 95, 98, ect. After rebooting and cold booting, I still get the error message:
NTLDR: I/O ERROR READING DISK. PLEASE INSERT ANOTHER
DISK.
At this point I could not figure out anything more. The only thing I could think of trying was going into the CMOS and changing the Auto settings for the primary and secondarys, to normal, then I tried some other options & as the Cmos sets now, it is back to the way it was. I then thought I would try installing win98, just the first edition, to see if I could at least install that, and it did so perfectly as far as I know, after doing another clean install. I then put in disk number one for Win NT, before formatting again, just to see what kind of message I would get this time, and it said:
File\ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded.
The error code is 4 . Setup cannot continue.
Press any key to exit.
So needless to say, I had to exit, not knowing what is going on.
I took Win NT disk one, to my P4, and immeadiatly started loading some drivers, but I backed out of that by pressing F3, as I didn't want to install NT on that computer. However, at least it wanted too. On the P1, I cannot get this to happen, & after reading some on winNt, it does have an installation bug that they have not yet resolved. I think the problem is in the Cmos settings in the P1, but I can't be sure, as I am not a computer tech, though I know a bit more than the average user. I would like to get Nt installed on the P1, as it was recommended by a friend of a friend that NT would make a good, reliable OS for the P1 that would be on 24/7, acting as a server for the 2 other computers. So far I have purchased a Hub, and 2 Network cards, one for the P1 server computer and the other for my other P1 computer that will feed off of server PC 1. My P4 did not need an ethernet card, as it came with one. Presently the Direcway Dish is only hooked to the P4. I am at a loss as to how to get Win Nt installed on the P1, don't know what to do in the Cmos settings, if anything & sure would appreciate if someone could help me out, if it is not to much of a problem. The other P1 that I am trying to get service to belongs to my retired Dad. I did a clean install on his about 2 weeks ago, and that computer is ready to be networked, however I do not know how to go about this. I thought I could install Win Nt as easily as all of the others, but found out differently. I wonder if I could just use Win98, but hesitate as Nt is supposed to be more reliable for what the need is here. I have hunted information on the net for many days, weeks actually, and still I can't find the exact information I need to complete this job. If anyone out there could help me out, again, it sure would be appreciated very much. If you would like to talk to me on the phone, if that would be easier, email me and I will give you my number to call me collect and then I could call you back, if you would let me know your phone number. Sometimes things are much easier on the phone, less time consuming, I have found in the past, however this may be real something really simple that I do not have the knowledge of and probably just a short email would help me out a great deal, or just a reply here with the hopefully little info I need.
Thank You Very Much, Sincerely, Mercedes
