dsl destination not reachable

I have ATT dsl service. The modem was on a winme computer and the phone line went bad. So I put the modem on my win xp pro machine. Went through the wizard. The wizard said everything is good. I can't get online. I get a message box- ERROR 769: The specified destination is not reachable.
Att says the modem is connected and the problem is in my machine. I don't know where to start to figure this out or what other info to give you to help me. I do know that I will be told what you need before you can start to answer though.
Yes, I am also searching the forum for past similar problems, but don't know if I'm using the proper search word.

Control Panel->System->hardware->device manager
expand net adapters, select ur NIC, hit enable on action menu, exit device manager. Then go control panel->network/internet connections, & setup net wiz, reboot.
