Linux is now 90% perfect for me, i still need to get the drivers to PRINT! I have gotten linux to do pretty much what i wanted to do with it in the first place! I download music, i transfer files to my ftp, i stream music... basically, im cool with that part of the deal. Im learning everyday more and more... If i could set a ratio between my usage between Linux and WIndows id say Linux is winning.... 3 to 1 <! i use linux for everything, even my office stuff, but i still have only one problem. I cant get my Compaq IJ 650 Series Printer to work. its the default printer that my pc came with..... IM running Linux on a Compaq 900mhz 256ram pc. It works fine. Im so happy with it but i sure wish that it could print. Any sugesstions that dont require me to compile or modify any "kernels" bcuz i dont even know how to do that "yet" Thanxs very much by the way: im using Mandrake 9.1 |
What printer dameon are you using? (If you don't know, go to the KDE system menu, go to printers, and look at the bottom right corner. It will say something like CUPS or LPR or something). |
printer daemon im using "LDP" right now....... but i do know how to configure it to use "CUPS" printer server i think...... i know what to do....... i just dont know how or where to get the drivers for my printer..... but if u do know how i can get this thing to print please help! :-) !! |
The CUPS dameon is much better IMO, but it's not installed by default...I think. It uses different ways of talking to printers and I'm pretty sure it uses different drivers. Go to the Mandrake Control Center. Go to packages (the bottom one), and click add packages. type CUPS in the list, and select the cups-version###s package (you'll know it). Click okay, and let it install everything. Now go to the KDE system control center. Go to Printers. Click 'Administrater Mode'. Select 'CUPS' as the dameon. Now try installing your printer (delete any other attempts under LDP if you haven't already). Let us know how it went! |
While i only use drake 9.1 for gaim, gnomeICU, and teamspeak, it does everything great. When i get some time i want to get deeper into the os and really work with, but for what im doing now, i love it! For the past few days i have been trying to install YahooIM, hopefully ill get it in by the end of week. (im so slow...hehehe) btw, do you have to defrage in linux? or is not gay like windows? |
No defragging necessary. It's automatic. |
btw, do you have to defrage in linux? or is not gay like windows?
LMAO, your choice of words are incredible. While linux file systems do fragment, they fragment at an incredibly slow rate, so defragmenting is NOT an issue. Cups has a nice web management interface for grabbing the proper printer driver, you may need to download the foomatic package also if it isnt installed (this is a package with MANY printer drivers for CUPS) |
im going to configure CUPS print server..... i noticed that when i installed linux..... it asked if i wanted to "run" the server and i chose not to, since i knew that my printer was not supported, i'll enable it right now and try to find the drivers, i'll tell you how this goes in just one second fooomatic what?!!!!! |
