Bit of help needed

Hello all.

I was recently built 2 mates pc's - each one using the odd salvaged bit from their old machines (CD roms etc). There was enough bits left over on their old pc's to make another machine which my friend wants for his mother to replace their old Compaq. I have built the machine and stumbled across a problem - when I boot the machine, the colours on the monitor are all wrong. For example the writing whilst posting which should be white is a kinda dull pink colour and the energy saving logo in the top right corner is red not green with a yellow border. Even when Windows boots up the blue and red are almost flourescent??

Now we aint talking a new machine here, bloody far from it in fact. It's an old Pentium 2 333MHz on a Gigabyte mobo, 256meg SDRAM, ATi Rage Pro Turbo graphics card and a 4 gig hard drive. Please stop laughing, if ya think this is bad ya wanna see their old Compaq .

I formatted the drive freshly installed Windows when I started. I've tried swapping the RAM, graphics card and even tried changing mobo and starting again but no joy - each time the colours are well messed up. I tried the monitor he gave me on my pc and it works fine.

I'm totally stumped on this one now - I don't think it could be a driver problem coz when I rebuild my pc and have nothing on but Windows itself all colours are fine. I know both the old pc's I built this one from ran ok before they were stripped.

Any ideas anyone?

It sounds as though it is a driver problem.

As in the AGP drivers as opposed to the actual graphics card drivers?

I've tried getting new drivers from the Gigabyte web site but they aint got them for either motherboard.

You should install the mobo AGP drivers then the cards vid drivers.

Can't find the 4 in 1 drivers at Gigs site?

I have two to play with a GA-686BX and a GA-686LX3 - like I say some pretty old stuff. There are no drivers at all on the Gigabyte site from what I've found - just a little note saying coming soon....

But am I not right in thinking that when you first switch on ya machine and it displays the various info during it's initial boot up, or if you go into BIOS, you are not actually using any drivers installed on the mobo coz you haven't even gotten into Windows yet?

For example, I rebuild my machine on a fairly regular basis to keep it running sweet, so when I format my drive and re-install Windows, I have absolutely no motherboard drivers installed - yes?

Anyone got a clue where I can aquire the AGP drivers for either of the above two motherboards?? I have tried several on-line driver resource sites but they generally only have BIOS updates.

This discoloration is evident even in the BIOS? If the monitor is not on it's last leg, you may be able to fix it through the menu of the monitor. In there there should be color/temperature settings.

It will have options similar to these:
9300K
6500K
5500K
USER/CUSTOM

the numbers may not be exact, but similar. Changing between these color temperatures (those are degrees Kelvin) will change the overall color appearance of your monitor. Most users will use the 9300K setting.

As for your drivers, XP & 2K should autorecognize those boards, including the onboard video. 98se may, but I'm not sure on that one. In fact, from what I see, it looks like you only need the drivers for Win95. But here are some hits on closely related Rage Pro Turbo drivers: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...=Google+Search

You'll need to check on the exact chip you have.

Found sombody who wants to buy the BIOS chip off your GA-686BX : http://www.twosco.co.uk/the_list.htm
