how do I set the default working directory in winXP?

my mother's computer uses a different working directory then she would like (it's the default one)

how do I change that system-wide?

thanks

it's the default directory that you are taken to when you choose to save a file from within another application...

imagine clicking "save" within WORD. it's the directory that would default automatically.

Well, see, that's going to vary from program to program. Some programs will set a default directory once you save a file there. Others make you browse from a certain location every time. If the application will let you, there may be an option or config file that will let you manually change the automatic saving/working directory.

What's the program(s) she's looking to set a default for?

If you want to change it system-wide, you can't do it because many programs save it in their own folder by default. You can move My Documents folder to another location by right clicking and choosing properties.

As far as changing default location, some programs give you the option, in others choose Save As and save it where you want and it sticks the next time. You have to try all these ways.

I know that in some tweak programs, like tweakXP, you can change registry settings to achieve what you want but even then you can't do it globally because different programs have different default save locations.

For example, most microsoft products will save in My Documents but Lotus will save in the Lotus Folder.

Within Word, at menu bar try Tools... Options... File Locations...
