Sharing printer

After a long time I have been able to share my printer over my 2 computer network. I, however still can't get it to print. When I highlight it to operate I get these two messages."User intervention required" and" Use printer offline." Can anyone help to get me going..If this don't work I will use an AB switch, however I don't need another device to operate this printer.

I have a WinXP and Win 98. I am trying to share from XP to 98

That sounds like an issue with the printer, not the sharing.

Can you print from either PC? What about the one it's physically connected to -- my guess is no. Make sure you can print properly on the PC it's connected to first, then try the PC that's attempting to print over the network.

Also, what kind of printer is it?

Go to HP's web site, and make sure you have the latest print drivers.

Also try another USB cable if you have one.

The first thing is to get it working again with the XP machine. Try removing and reinstalling the printer from scratch. Remove all the drivers etc. Also try using a different USB port. Are there any other USB devices connected to the PC?

I had this problem with a Lexmark Inkjet. After reading the fine print, I learned that the driver would not work "across OS platforms". In other words, a printer on XP could not be accessed by 98.

Can you install the printer on the 98 and check if the XP will print from it?

Sometimes you can manually install the driver on the 2nd machine (98) and then redirect printing from LPT1 to the shared printer. (This works for some Epsons)
