SMART failure predicted, wont boot to Windows
When I boot up the computer it comes up with SMART failure predicted on primary master....i hit f1 for a while, and it booted only to a certain point. In normal mode, after the little windows icon (i have XP) with the bar running across the bottom comes up for a while, the screen goes black for a while, but it never gets in to windows. In safe mode, after the last file is listed it stops and wont go in to windows.
This happened for about a week until suddenly it started working again (no error messages or anything). I ran scandisk and defrag during this time (they were both slow as hell), but there seemed to be no problems, although the computer was unusually slow. Then about a week later the exact same problem came back. Any ideas?
Thanks for any help you can give me.
Thanks
Matt Collinsworth

If your PC is a Compaq (and possibly also if it is an HP), this post may help you to get a new drive.
Which SMART code were you getting?

A SMART failure basically says your hard drive is about to completely die, so you should get it replaced.
Who made your hard drive (Maxtor, Western Digital, Seagate, etc)? Depending on how old the drive is, it'll probably be replaced for free under the warranty. Otherwise you'll probably want to go buy a new hard drive quick so you can get your stuff off your current one.

It's the newest factor to take into account for. A lot of prebuilt systems have smaller rated power supplies than aftermarket...they are tailored for the systems they are used in. I'd check there first, and make sure you just haven't had problems with power fluctuations causing the problems.
Beyond that, the HDD is probably on it's way out.

Yes in that it will sometimes give you enough warning to buy a new one and get any important files off the old one.
In addition to checking the power supply, make sure all the IDE cables are pushed in fully and correctly.
Also, if you dropped or knocked your computer while installing the fans, that could be the cause of the hard disk damage.
