hyperthreading non 3gig p4s

i have heard that all p4 processors are capable of hyperthreading but that it was not as efficient as the final version in the 3gig and up p4s. i was wondering if anyone knew if this was actually true and if so how do you enable it. i am running a p4 1.6 overclocked to 1920 with stock heatsink and fan and just want to try and squeeze a little more out of it.

Hyperthreading is only available to P4 2.4GHz to 3.2GHz at this time. I don't think your 1.6GHz P4 is capable of hyperthreading.

Even still....I think you need a hyper threading adapter attached to the P4 "B" 2.4 GHz - 3.0 GHz or a BIOS flash to enable hyperthreading in the "B" cores. Dont quote me on that though, I remember reading that vaguely somewhere.

i seem to remember reading an article somewhere where they were testing hyperthreading before any of the legitimate hyperthreading was released. they had mobos that they enabled it on. it may be that i was thinking of the the 2.4 - 3.0gig processors.
thanks anyways though

I think that was on the Xeons though, where is was enabled. Well before the P4s got it.

My 2.53GHz P4 is on an MSI 845 PE-Max which has hyperthreading. But the board reads the chip and determines whether or not to enable it or not. Wish I could enable mine. But no go here....

is it just that it will not enable, or are you just not able to select the option?

Just like the multiplier, the option is locked in the chip itself. If the option is unlocked in the chip, the mobo reads that and enables the feature. At least, that's how I understood it when I read about it.

The Motherboard detects whether or not it is an unlocked feature on the CPU.

I do not have the option to enable it though if I were to put in a 3 gig or higher the option would be enabled thus allowing me to either leave it on or turn it off.
