Detonator drivers limiting desktop resolution

I have a GeForce4 MX 420 and an AcerView 76ie monitor which is capable of resolutions higher than 1600x1200. I'm using Windows 98SE with DirectX 9.0b. Up until yesterday I was using the 30.82 Detonator drivers, and the highest resolution they would allow was 1152x864. That's not as high as the monitor can go, but since I usually keep my desktop at 1152x864, that never really mattered to me. Now, I have just installed the Detonator XP 44.03 drivers, and they have brought my max resolution down to 1024x768. I have noticed in the past that Windows Media Player 9 (which I have installed) sometimes affects this (I mention this just in case it's important ).

How can I make Windows allow the resolutions that my monitor can handle?

Thanks in advance!

You're uisng a version of Win98?

Get's HZ tool. It should work great for enabling or disabling specific resolutions plus it'll allow you to control the refresh rate of each resolution.

Oh, there's something I forgot to mention: When the Detonator drivers are installed, for some reason they find 2 monitors (I definitely only have one connected). One is the AcerView 76ie which it recognizes fine, and is the one which is used (which I have to select in properties to change resolution) and has the 1024x768 limit, and then there is "Default Monitor" which can go up to 2048x1536 (beyond the monitor's capability) and doesn't do anything (changing the resolution on that does nothing; I can't do anything else with it, either). It just automatically installs along with the AcerView. And, unfortunately, it's the only one that HZTool decides to recognize.

Neat program though, thanks for suggesting it.

In your Device Manager, under Monitors, do you have the two monitors listed?

If so, delete them both. Restart Windows and it should only detect the one you're using and intall the appropriate settings for it.

Can't hurt to give it a try.

I deleted both and restarted, and they were both found and installed by Windows right away.

I also tried disabling ("in this hardware profile") Default Monitor, but it didn't make any difference.
