CDR-5W48 not working

I have a CD Writer and according to the Device Manager it's a CD Writer CDR-5W48 and I am having many problems with it. I have the same one installed in my 1.6 GHz Pentium 4 on an Intel motherboard (sorry, I'm not sure which one...) running Windows XP Pro with no peripheral devices installed (except for the traditional monitor, keyboard, mouse, and printer) and it works just fine.

However, I have a 2.4 GHz Pentium 4 800 MHz FSB on an Abit IS7 motherboard running Windows XP Pro with only a keyboard, mouse, and monitor attached to it and the drive fails to work on a periodic basis.

The first time, Windows would not detect the drive at all; it would not appear in My Computer. However, it showed up on the BIOS when I checked which IDE devices were hooked up. I used System Restore and I was able to start using it normally again.

Then I encountered another problem. This time, the drive is able to read CDs but I can't get it to write. I tried Roxio Easy CD Creator 6 and the built-in Windows write function and both did not work. I have yet to try another System Restore, but I was wondering if there was another solution.

I apologize if this post is unneccessarily long, but I was told to be as specific as possible. Thank you for your time.

Do you have the jumpers on the CDR drive set correctly? (ie: master or slave depending on what else you have hooked up to the IDE channel) Double check to make sure they are correct. I have seen similar issues with CDROM and CDR drives that were installed with the jumpers set incorrectly.

I am sure I have it set correctly; I double-checked the first time it stopped working. I only have two IDE devices on this system: my hard drive, set on single device master, is connected to the primary connector on the cable, which is then connected to IDE1 on my motherboard and my CD drive, set on master, is connected to the primary connector on the cable, which is then connected to IDE2 on my motherboard. I was thinking of putting both devices on the same IDE controller, but that would slow down my hard drive....
