Mouse randomly stops working

This problem has been annoying me for the last few days and i have no idea what it could be. My mouse is a microsoft intellimouse explorer and it has started to stop and start working randomly. It will stop working (leds all turn off in mouse like it loses power) and the computer will make the sound like you have just unplugged a usb device, then usually a few seconds later it will start working again.

Sometimes though I will have to Unplug it and then plug it back in again to get it to work again.

It won't do it while the computer is idleing only when I am running a really cpu intensive program.

My computer spes are:

P4 3.06@3.450ghz (Swiftech MCX4000 /w Thermaltake ducting mod and Smartfan 2)
Asus P4T533-C
1GB Samsung PC1066 RDRAM
60 and 120GB Seagate Hard drives
Geforce 4 ti4200
Antec TrueBlue 480 watt power supply
Thermaltake Xazer III case.

Anyone have any ideas?

EDIT: Forgot to mention I run Windows XP Pro.

Had similar experiences with two different optical mice from MS.

In one instance, de-installing the drivers for the mouse and then downloading and installing updated drivers resolved this issue.

In the other instance, the mouse finally quit working altogether and I had to purchase a replacement mouse.

Have you tried swapping the USB port the mouse is plugged into? Other than that, not much else I can offer you that Target hasn't already gone over. Try updating drivers for the mobo if they are available, and the mouse.

Is the cord damaged at all on the mouse?

My daughter had a similar problem, but it was a ball-tracked mouse. The cursor would also dissapear sometimes. I hadn't yet educated her on the dangers of downloading and installing every available plug-in on the internet. That turned out to be the problem. Once the offending programs were removed, she had her mouse back.

Target was right it was a driver problem, i'm gussing it was spyware that screwed it up. I downloaded adaware and ran that then deleted my mouse drivers and installed new ones and it's working fine now.

I thought I had solved the problem with the new drivers but a few weeks ago it started doing it again then the mouse stopped working completely. It wouldn't even light up anymore, I'm guessing now that the mouse had just started to fail and finally quit. I went out and bout a cheap optical mouse for $15 CDN and haven't had the problem since.

mouse randomly working

When mouse is not working, try alt+tab few times. Not sure what the problem is but it activates the mouse again. FYI, I am using XP.
