Losing Connection

This just started happening a few days ago, when I built my computer. Download speeds have soared: I used to download at about 30 kb/s, but now frequently download at about 150 kb/s. This is all using the same internet connection, modem, and router. But in games, I see frequent lag spikes. Also in half life, about every 30 minutes or so I get a "connection problem" error. But as soon as I reconnect to the server, its fine again! I have no idea what's going on, and any help is appreciated.

Yes, i have cable. Comcast is my ISP. I'm not sure what firmware I have for my SpeedStream router. How would I go about checking firmware versions and checking for updates?
