do you love overkill?

no, its not a new game or anything, i am talking about using things that almost TOO powerfull for out own good...
example: right now i am using a volcano 9 coolmod on a non-OCed amd athlon xp 1800+...

right now (with out any thermal compound or tape or anything) my proc is running at 105F... i think that is pretty good

btw, i am waiting to get some good thermal compound from my friend, that is why there is nothing on it right now

Without Thermal Compound? You need to put some on there. It'll drop your temps even more to have the heatsink actually make good heat-transferring contact with your CPU core.

Edit: Ooooh, didn't see that last line there.

Butch...,
Your graphic shows a fan speed of more than 5200rpm... that's got to be putting on a lot of noise.

Just to put things in a bit of perspective, your XP1800+ non-OC'ed temps at full load are about 45°C. I've got an XP1800+ TBred OC'ed to 2000mHz (XP2600+ speed, approximately) running Seti@home (100% CPU output) and the CPU temp rarely exceeds 43-44°C.

For cooling, I'm using a ThermalRight AX-7 HS + Sunon 80mm/50.6CFM/3900rpm/~40dBA fan + Arctic Silver III... all in all, relatively quiet. The full tower case utilizes two 120mm 1900rpm fans (bottom/front drawing air in, top/rear exhausting air out)

You ought to hear my computer running. The noise doesn't bother me at all, the music is too loud to hear any of the fans (9 in all) .

I don't normally consider fans overkill. The lower the temp the better. That said, I wouldn't use a SLK900 on a 500mhz duron. That would be too much.
I just have a K7S5A motherboard, which kinda limits my overclocking, hopefully I will find the cash for some DDR ram before the prices get too high, and maybe I'll be able to squeeze some more mhz out of my XP1700+.
Currently its at 1613-1617mhz (clock chip causes some variation whilst its running, but its stable) with 147.8mhz FSB. I get the feeling my RAM is the limiting factor, as its only 512mb PC133 (crucial) I've got 2x Coolermaster Blue LED fans blowing out the back of my case, and antec 350w PSU, and 2x Evercool 80mm fans blowing in the front in front of my hard disks (20gb fujitsu 7200RPM, 30gb samsung 7200rpm, and 40gb WD 5400rpm)
