IP conflict in network

I have hd this problem for a while, and really have no idea how to fix it.I picked up an Acer Lan ALN325 nic today and installed it in my main rig.
I have an eternet 3com ISA nic in the other machine.I know that both cards function properly.I did have them sharing files a couple of hours ago.

What I did was try to share my dialup connection, and now upon bootup I get an "IP Conflict error" from both machines, and it disables the nic interface.
I also removed internet connection sharing from both machines, I figured being able to share files would be better than 0.Still no joy.

Like I said I could share files back ad forth before I tried to share a connection

both machines run 98se
750 t-bird
chaintech mobo
acer aln325 nic

other rig is

IBM 233
3com ethernet nic
that's really all I kow about it.

TIA

If they are set up with manual IP's could be they have the same one. If it's set to use DHCP, then set 'em both manually.

Set the one with the modem connected to 192.168.0.1, and the other to 192.168.0.2.

Modem connection should be set to auto DHCP, as it gets its IP from the ISP.

That help any. or am I teaching mice to chew cheese, here?

Cheers

Just make sure ya set the submasks the same for both the PC's. Doesn't automatically mask it in 98, I don't think.

Should be 255.255.255.0.

Then check with ping in a DOS box, eg ping 192.168.0.2 from the one set at 192.168.0.1.

If ya' don't like the 192.168.0.xxx, ya' can try the 172.16.0.xxx series as well!

I just found out about this when I set my 2Wire Homeportal up and the only IP block it would start with was the 172 series. Now, that it is up and running, I can change everything over to the 192 series if I want.

BTW, Mick is on the right track!

If'n he wants to use winICS he has to stick with 192.168.0.x, Harder. Otherwise it'll refuse to work.

Right again Mick!

You can also "ping" from Start/Run.

O-o-p-p-p-s!!!

Forgot about that, since I haven't used ICS in years! Proxies get around that!

The only trouble with pinging from Start/Run is that it doesn't leave the DOS box open.

So if it fails, ya have no idea what happend.
