win xp wont install HELP..!!

Hi all ,
Having trouble installing XP pro. It copies all of the files from the cd and then stops on the blue windows setup screen..

It is an A-openmx36le-v mobo with a duron 1000mhz processor and 256mb of ram..

The problem in the beginning was the old H/D ,it died,, i put it in another machine and it did not register at all so i got a new seagate 40gig and thats when i started running into trouble.. It was working with ME beforehand with the old h/d???

Any ideas
Cheers ..
Maty

awwwwwwww.... im dumb.... should of read your entire post!

Do'H

Since Windows XP Auto-Formats and Partitions your Harddrive (no more fdisk hooray)

Trying selecting a different Partition type rather then Quick Erase (default)

Since its a new Harddrive it needs the first time Format and Partition... XP will automatically do it on installation

But try a different setting when it prompts you about formating and partitioning

I forget the selections

If you could read them to me thatd be great!

Once again my stupidity has arroused....

Clear something up for us

Do you mean

It worked for Me beforehand with Old H\D

is me "you" or "Millenium Edition"

If its Millenium Edition Windows (go to my first post inquiring that XP only works with AMD Duron 1.3 and up!

If its worked with me (as in you) before hand.... Try my 2nd Post

Hey omc1jz, have ya' tried different RAM?

While the RAM may have worked fine on the old MoBo, the new one may not like it. XP can be real funny when it comes to ram to begin with. My old MoBo liked anything I put in it with the exception of PNY branded RAM, then it wouldn't even boot!

See if you can try another stick or brand of RAM and let us know what happens.

NOPE! I've got XP Pro running on a Duron 750MHz w/512MB PC133! I've also run it on a 800MHz Athlon Classic w/512MB PC100@107!

DOH!!!

If XP has a problem with the RAM, it will fail to install!

If the MoBo doesn't like the RAM, it will also cause a conflict with the installation of XP!

When you're computer is refusing to install XP, you try to eliminate some of the known things that will prevent it from installing! And RAM is a major one!

That's why I mentioned the RAM and the MoBo and its relation to refusing to install XP!

Cheers for you reply's..

yes i mean Millenium Edition , ME was installed on the old Hard Drive , The old H/D Failed , so i purchased a new seagate 40 gig and proceeded to install xp on the new hard drive.....

The xp installation process is going for about 2-4 mins before it stops. It stops after copying the setup files.... NOT later on in the install where it would be conflicting with installed devices..

I am thinking ram.... When i stick my head close to the mobo i can smell a really really faint smell... (dont know if i am imagining)
it does the ram count up ok though?

How do i troubleshoot ram , processor ? And also is there anything else i should look at?

I usually have no prob with xp installs and have done many very successfully this is the first install hiccup i have come across..

Thanks again..
Maty

Sorry for dble posting

Update: I have just installed win 98 successfully and it seems to be running ok??

I put the xp disk in to upgrade , it copied all the files and went to the countdown for restart.. It restarted and up came the win xp screen with the scrolling bar across the bottom and a black background but was very faint??? and then stalled..and stopped??

Do you think that there is a hardware conflict and is there a way i can tell for sure??

Cheers all.. This is startring to get to me and im in need of some good advice!!
Maty!!
