Kids new video card

Want to buy a new video card. MSI G4 Ti4200 Vivo ( $126) or MSI FX5600 VTDR ($167). Opinions?

I have one I love it.(MSI Ti4200) I especially love the games bundle.Not to mention the software.BTW don't use the MSI drivers for this card, trust me.Use nVidia's drivers.

you might want to look at thisAsus Card if you are looking to spend around $160

I'm looking at it pretty seriously...comes with a nice software bundle too. Not to mention the VIVO capability ( and HDTV )..

the 5600 supports DX 9 is better then the Ti4200 which does not support DX9. Although for $198 you can get the 9500 Pro off of newegg that faster then both of em. The Ti4800 is slower then its brother the Ti4600 Pro which is slower then the Radeon 9500 which supports DX 9.

Well, I'm running a Voodoo3 on Direct X 8.0...never had an issue with that. I believe Direct X is similar to the Detonator drivers, works with all video cards.

The FX5600 is slower than the Ti4200. ALTHOUGH it supprts DX9, which is a plus.

For the money you have, I would reccomend a ATI Radeon 9500 or 9600. They outperform both the ti4200 and FX5600.

It's because the word 'supports' is a bit vague (anyone got a better one?). The 4200 is a directX v 8.1 card (with all the hardware abilities of directx8.1) and the 5600 is a directx 9 card (with all the hardware abilities of directx 9) they are both compatible with directx 8 and 9, however the 5600 has more features that, when implemented (such as when running a directx 9 game), can make it run faster and look better than the 4200.
Regards,
Elad.

In very simple terms:
The Program (game or whatever) talks to DirectX;
DirectX talks to the driver;
The driver talks to the video card;
The video card electrocutes your monitor (it's ALIVE ...!!)

DirectX bypasses your OS (somewhat) to allow faster communication between the program and the hardware.

Cheers,
Elad.
