Food Wireless Network

I am looking to set up a wireless network but dont know much about networking.
I have two computers that need to be hooked up 1 running XP Pro and the other running XP Home. I have a cable modem. I dont want to spend a lot of money so could anyone help me out by telling me what i need to get and maybe some reccomended equipment?

well is speed over the wireless an important factor?

you can get wireless stuff for pretty cheap now.

i suggest a linksys router

http://www.linksys.com/products/prod...id=35&prid=540

and this is a pretty nice wireless card

the router will share of your cable modem so both computers will have internet and have the ability to share files.

Can't help recommend specific models, but you need to look for a wireless router for ease of use. Cable modem will plug directly into it.

You then have a choice of how to connect your two PC's. If one already has a NIC in it, you could place that one near the router and connect directly by a wired cat5 cable to the router (which should come with ports for wired connections, if it's a good one). The other, remoter ,PC will need a wireless network adapter, which will likely be a PCI card you install, or could be a USB device that plugs into an external USB slot (never used one of these, so not usre how reliable they are).

If neither PC has an interanl NIC, you could use two wirelss network adapters. More expensive, though, obviously.

Someone should help with specific model info for the US. Try looking a newegg.com for starters.

Cheers
Mick

well, all depends.. are you sure you want to go wireless? if so, have someone point ya out, i know the topic is wireless network, but just making sure. and if you don't want wireless, and want to do hardwire, get a linksys router, and since u only need one for 2 computers,i recomend the BEFSR41 by linksys... i've had mine for a while, about 3 months after it came out i think, and have not had a problem with it, and i've heard linksys has the best tech support around. i bought mine for around 115, but they've probably came down in price by now. and networking cable isn't expensive these days.

links:

cables:

and no i don't know if ebusinesscables is a good reputable company, just an diea of how much they run for that length, or more if you need more.

Alright Cool i think that Mickwish's idea is what will work for me because i have one close enough to connect directly and i need one wireless connection.

Ive got version 3 of the BEFW11S4 that I picked up at radioshack and its been working great.. however I read a ton of bad reviews about version 4 (basically not working well at all) over at amazon.com (after about 50 redundent reviews i stopped reading) when I was searching routers to buy a few weeks ago
