Inspiron 1100 PNY memory problem?

I just bought a PNY 256MB PC2100 DDR memory module from Best Buy. When I installed it in my Inspiron 1100 laptop, it would no longer boot. I am curious if this is an isolated problem, or if Dell just does not like PNY memory.
