WUSB11 ver.2.5--Internet Constantly Drops

Let me start by stating that I am a computer idiot, so I hope I am not asking a question that has been asked a million times already. (I did do a search but couldn't find an answer to my problem.)

I am using a WUSB11 ver 2.5 for my laptop (which is running Windows XP Pro), and it is connected wirelessly to a BEFW11S4 router.

My problem is that the Internet connection for the laptop would drop every 10 minutes or so, and I have to physically go to the router and press the reset button for the Internet to work again--it defeats the whole purpose of having a wireless network (the sole purpose for this network is for the laptop to have Internet connection, not file sharing or anything else). The weird thing (at least to me) is that, according to the connection icon on the bottem right hand corner, the "Status" is still "Connected" and the "Signal Strength" is still "Excellent".

I have tried un-installing and re-installing the hardware and software, and I have also tried downloading the latest driver from Linksys. But the problem persists.

Please help!

Thank you very much in advance for your help!

have you updated the firmware for the router?

http://www.linksys.com/download/

also is your router near cordless phones, microwave or any other eletronic devices?

you have the antenna point both straight up and down correct?

Thanks for replying!

I've gone to Linksys and looked for the firmware as suggested, but the page displayed the following:

"This firmware upgrade should only be performed on a WUSB11 version 2.0. Please confirm your version. If you have a WUSB11 version 2.5, downloading this firmware may cause your WUSB11 2.5 to become inoperable."

So I didn't download it.

My router is no where near a cordless phone or a microwave or any other eletronic devices.

Yes, I have tried pointing the antenna both upward and downward. (The connection is always "excellent" when I click on the connection icon, but there is just no Internet connection.)

Thanks!

Go to My Network Places and right click the wireless connection ,

click on properties , select the Wireless Networking tab and UNCHECK the authentication stuff.

Heathcliff,

I've been messing around with the WUSB11 for about a year now and I can't solve the same problem. I've changed OSs to WinXP from Win2k, built a whole new machine with USB 2.0, updated firmware and drivers (btw, there's a brand new driver available for the WUSB11 from Windows Update), and fooled around with the settings on both the adapter and the router (I have the same router.) I believe the problem is with MS's USB networking interface. Either that, or the WUSB11 is just inherently defective. I've finally given up and I bought a Linksys wireless bridge to hang the workstation off. That's an expensive option and not worth it for a laptop. I use an Orinoco Gold card for my laptop and, as I said, I have the same router. My connection from my laptop is always rock solid. You may want to consider such a card.
