PCI simple comm. controller?? SM Bus Controller?? please help!

Can anyone tell me what either of the devices are that I have listed in the title?

My mother just got a new dell computer, and these 2 devices show up in the device manager as having exclamation points. I can't figure out what drivers to install so that it goes away. or if i even need to..

winXPpro

thanks

Simple comms controller = "soft" modem. If you got a modem in there, install its drivers - and if you don't, enter BIOS and disable the chipset's integrated modem engine (which would serve an AMR or CNR modem card if you had one).

SMbus controller = part of the chipset. Install vendor's chipset driver package to get it identified correctly.

I take it you won't want a warranty on your moms new Dell then?
Just run the chipset drivers for the motherboard, and you should be OK. You can get them from DElls site - or maybe a CD your mom got with the PC.

Good luck, I've purchased a few Dells this year, and wiped one of them. One big bonus is that you don't have a trace of AOL anywhere. Be sure to install all the drivers on the "Drivers & Utilities" CD or you could waste some time. Let's just say it's hard to install a cable modem if the NIC drivers haven't been installed.

heh, this is hardly the first dell that we've owned. It's never been a problem in the past. the only time we can't fix it ourselves, it's a harware problem and they jsut replace it...

thanks for the help all. problem solved

So, is there a PCI card modem in the machine?

I sure don't think so... I'm not actually anywhere near the machine (I have to call home and have my younger brother do it!)

I'll check, but assuming there is not, can you think of any other posibilities?
