converting mp3 to wma

I want to convert mp3 files to wma so I can put more songs onto my Sonicblue Rio 800 mp3 player. I'm using Advanced MP3 Converter version 1.82 and was easily able to convert. The problem is the converted wma files aren't any smaller. What do I need to do to convert mp3 into smaller wma or can I not do what I want to do.

Does that rio even support wma?

You need to alter the bitrate for smaller file sizes.

Mp3's are way Smaller then Wave (wma) files

Go MP3....

Wave Files are huge

Sound-You cant tell the difference unless your superman (sonic hearing)

The problem is you are converting from one lossy format to another, so it cant really compress any more than the mp3 already did. What you need to do is to rip the files to wav then convert the wav files to wma. Whatever you do, dont convert the mp3's to wav then convert the wav files to wma the sound quality will be horrid and not in anyway worth the extra couple kb's you save in space.

Yes it can compress them more by adjusting the bitrate.
You can easily test it by converting a raw avi file to 1000kbs avi file, and then re-encoding it to 100kbs avi file. Which one of them is smaller? Try and see.

wma files are not wave files.

I would also suggest sticking with mp3 just because I really do not like the wma format.

Yes you can tell the difference, and you don't have to be Superman.

There is plenty of MP3 to WMA Proggy's out there, If you have Windows XP, you can get plus XP which has a tool to do that. The results are very good, A file that sounds the same and long as you choose a high bitrate, and is about 2 MB smaller.

Thanks Muno! I was able to adjust the wma bit rate - 160 works pretty good - makes about a 40% reduction in size. Works good quality-wise as long as the MP3's are at least 256mbps. Thanks again!

64 kbit wmas actually sound pretty good in comparison to 128 kbit mp3s. you can acutally use windows media player (v7 or greater) or a recent winamp version to do the conversions.

Well, I think this advice is going to depend on your ears. Personally I like 128bit mp3s and I wouldn't even give 64bit wmas the time of day.
