"Old" playstation and PS1

My son's old playstation recently died. It predates the PS1/PS2 models - he bought it a couple of years ago before the current white PS1 box came out.

He's got a bunch of old games and really doesn't want to spend the money on a PS2. We've been trying to figure out if his games will play on the new white PS1 box that you can get in Wally World for about $50. I must be reading the wrong web sites because I can't seem to get a definitive answer.

By the way we all know that there's no such thing as price fixing - but everybody just happens to get the same price (to the penny) for these items.

Anyway can somebody enlighten me as the compatibility of the Playstation series games?

I am assuming he had a large grey PS1 that recently died, and if thats the case then your "old" games will play on the "new" smaller PS1 as well as the PS2

Cyclone is right. They will work. PS2 prices have come down. You may even find one used somewhere for a good price. Plus the PS2 doubles as a DVD player if you allready dont have one. So its like getting three for the price of one. plays older PS1 + PS2 +DVD's.

Thanks guys - I sort of figured that was the case. It was one of the old grey boxes that died.

As usual my buddies at Techimo come through.

The PS1 (white one) is exactly the same as the grey one, just it doesn't have the three phono leads for video and audio, it does't have the expansion port edge connector at the back, and it uses a slightly smaller PCB. I think the power supply and mainboard are on the same PCB in the PS1, whereas on the old grey ones, the power supply was a seperate board about 1.5 inches wide that ran down the left of the console (under the power and reset switches, right to the back where the power jack was)

If you have all the old games....look for a referbusished one at your local GameStop, EB, Babbage. They should have one. I mean I've seen orginal working Atari's in them.
