Personally I am a fan of XP Pro as well. Before XP Win2k was my favorite.

sixfoot4,

My Hardware: AMD Athlon XP 2000 (1,67 GHZ) 512 RAM (not ddr) GeForce 2 MX 440 (64 MB) 2x 40 GB Hard drive (Samsung, one 5400 RPM, the other 7200 RPM)

Do you guys actually prefer XP Pro over 2K Pro, if so why?
Which one is better for mild gaming and overall use?

thanks for the fast responses

I'd also say XP, I've gotten better performance (framerate etc) in it to 2k, and 2k ran smoother than ME/9x.
I have a very similar spec to you, even down to the generation of the graphics card (Radeon 32mb SDR) and although I use Linux exclusivley on it now, I found XP to be the best, and the way I tweaked it it was very stable (probably possible with the SPs now though)

Is it worth to install the Service Pack if I use XP or not...
BTW what are framerates? always heard about it but never knew what it is...

So you guys suggest XP Pro, well I will take your advices
But why do many ppl say its spyware, bloated, crap, etc?

Many prefer 2K instead of XP, what do you guys think about that?
Security a flaw in XP?

for examples what services to shut down?

thanks for the attention durante

! vote for winXP. Win2000 gives the same performance but a lot f games won't run on it, or run poorly for some reason. XP gives the performance of 2000 with the compatibility of a newer-age OS..

Also, if you are using XP SOLELY for games, you can tweak the heck out of it and get tons for 3dmark points. (and faster games in the end.)

goto http://www.blackviper.com/ and look for his WinXP services list. I gained 2000 3dmark scores by turning services off.

2k just wasnt compatible enough with my games for me. that was sometime ago now. and i am sure you will find better driver support for hardware on xp.

framerates are how many frames per second show during games. the human eye can only notice less than 21 fps though i think

it takes getting used to, but you can kill all the nice features, like going back to the original taskbar and start button, killing the theme, messenger, windows messenger, and others.

I'd go w/winxp. Games play a lot better on it.

2k is faster because fewer services start with the computer by default. Windows 2000 is fairly bare bones compared to XP. Both XP and 2k are great for games though, either will do fine .

Can somebody give me an example of a game that will not work on Windows 2000? I have never encountered this and here are all the games I have played:
Doom
Doom 2
Duke Nukem 3D
Rise of the Triad
The Sims
Mechwarrior 2
Sim City 2k
Sim City 3k
Sim Copter
Quake
Quake 2
Diablo
Diablo 2
Diablo 2 LOD
Half-Life
BattleField 1942

The only game I absolutely could not get to work on both XP and 2k was the original Command & Conquer.
