please advise on correct power supply for amd xp2400

Hi

guys I built myself an xp2400 and guess what ? I cant use it
my power supply which says "400W" is no good, puts 11amps at 12v, my cpu is on low voltage and the 12v is at alomost 13 trying to compensate

so before I burn something I decided to get a better PS

quick about the machine: no lights / no fans (except cpu fan )/ gigabyte board (7vac)/512mb pc2100/tnt2 v-card/one dvd/one burner/one 7200rpm hdd (maxtor 8mb model)/one net card/one fdd - thats all

my choices:

1 allied PS, specs: 300W /3.3v @ 28A /5v @ 30A /12v @ 15A
2 sparkle , 300W /3.3v @ 28A /5v @30A /12v @ 15A
3 allied , 350W / 3.3@28A/ 5@30A/ 12@15A
4 allied, 400W / 3.3@28A/ 5@30A/ 12@15A

by the way how come they all have the same Amp ratings when the W is different ? so confused

and 5: powmax 400W +3.3@28A, +5@30A, +12@25A
the only one that actually has a different Amp rating

now I guess they all are better then what I have now, I have 400W/ 3.3@28/5@30/12v@11A (low huh ?)

my main question: would a 300W keep up with the 2400 ? or should I go higher ? but higher is confusing, why are the amps the same even if the W is higher ?

sorry for such a long one, but Im very confused and it sux without a computer (well I have my laptop, but laptop is so very powerful I cant even play a mpg file still grateful I have it, imagine what Id do now without a pc at all, probably go crazy )

please help

Thanks
Dan

v*a=w well not really but its close enough for you and yes 11a is a stupidly low 12v rail

omardeath has some power supplies that he likes and always links too that are a good price too but i dont have the url so i will let him post it

thanks for the props cbuddha

this is the low cost power supply i like alot . 23$ shipped it has no problem running my oc's xp2500 barton .
http://store.yahoo.com/akidacomputer/acpowsup50du.html
it is dual fan also . even if you don't get this one make sure u get one that is dual fan . and make sure it has a fan on the bottom of the supply and the back , NOT front of the supply and back of the supply . Amd recomends haveing a fan on the bottom , so it is overtop the cpu itself , and the back . here is a pic of the side of the supply in my machine so you can see the rails http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-.../achieve11.JPG

good luck .

ohh and i would add atleast 2 case fans . 1 in front 1 in back . it is also recomended by amd to have a set up like that .

Hey Omardeth...

I googled about 2400 and power supply and wound up here. First post, but avid resellrating user.

Anyway, thanks for the PSU recommendation. I just ordered one about 30 minutes ago. I've got a cheapo raidmax 350 OEM that came with my case right now, and an 1800+. I just ordered a 2400+ and new that a 12v/14a rating isn't going to cut the mustard with all my other junk. (4 led fans, cold cathode, hdds, cdrw/dvd, etc.)

I've been barely scraping by, and have been unable to OC more than 140fsb b/c of the raidmax.

That PSU is the only inexpensive one with dual fans, and one on the bottom like a TruePower antec that I could find. It was $22 shipped.

I'm taking your word, and the reviews on their site about it

I'll come back and post results. Right now with the raidmax my 12v is 12.86 which is pretty poor from what I've read, and that was just reading in the bios. I could imagine how bad it would be playing a game or burning or something like that.

Thanks!

Thanks guys !

I ended up with a powmax 400W that a friend of mine had as a spare, it has 25A at 12V and it cured my problem all the way !

Thanks again
Dan
