London & laptops...

my parents are going to london for a week and she wanted to get a 220 converter for her laptop. so i told her to go to radio shack. she gets there and they guy @ the store told her to check her laptop, because it may have a switch on it to do it automatically, so she wouldnt be wasting her money. what the crap. i have never seen that on a laptop, is there such a thing?

anyway, it is an hp pavillion laptop. does any one have any horror stories using just a store bought converter as opposed to an HP or manufacturer converter? any other tips suggestions?

With most laptops, all you need is the plug converter. Most power supplies will adjust automatically. I know this is true of my Dell Latitude. Just check the power supply.

The power supply on the laptop should say something like 100-240V or 110/220V, 110/220/240V or whatever. If so just get a standard two to three pin converter, as osprey says. I think no laptop manufacturer would get away with not accepting universal voltages.

BTW, just for reference, the UK supply is 240V.

A tad off-topic here, but if your folks are bringing the lappy just for email and such, it might be easier to just leave it at home and use the internet cafes. They're literally everywhere in London and they're very cheap.

Of course, if they're using it for a presentation or whatever, disregard the above.

that is exactly what they ended up doing. it was cheap and they were convienient. they did buy the adapter before they left though, they just didnt use it.
