Making a TIMO Distro!!

I've got to thinking, TIMO's community of users are amazing! we have Tonz of people that are Specialists in their individual field. I would love to try to harness that power, muscle, and smarts to create a wonderful linux distro for TIMO! It is a bunch of work if you try to do it by yourself but with a brainstorm of ideas and people that have their "special" talents we could make an awesome release. Plus it would be an easy answer to "which distro should I use" hehe. This is the basic underlining meaning of what I would invision the TIMO distro to be.

1) Without a doubt: Ease of install... thinking maybe using the knoppix package for the install.... Need IMO's

2) Ease of package getting... thinking Debians apt-get feature is be nice.

3) Experts would be enticed to use it... thinking minimal packages to start with so they could customize it from there.

4) Of course throw in some custom graphics for TIMO! hehe

I need IMO's

sounds good, but i doubt anyone will have that kind of time and energy until winter rolls around... then we could get the ball rolling.

sounds like fun, now you just need to create a live-online connection to Techimo that lets you see who is on/private messages/ the most recent posts all on your desktop with live 1 minute updates...

i would help if i knew anything about linux, but i hardly to, so about all i could do is make your TIMO based imagery.

this is a great idea.

Although i would not be able to participate much in the development as far as actual coding and things, i would like to be a beta tester if the need be.

I like Linux and a TIMO Distro would be great.

Thats a hell of way to up your post count Urban!
Try making a SUGGESTION instead of not helping at all

Best way is to start from an existin distro and build from that.. otheos built a 'distro' based on redhat that was optimized for AMD. Not sure what happened to the project though
Part of the problem was the only person we could find to host it (being 650MB for ONE cd is a bit heavy let alone 3-5) was MntSnow.. then getting it from Otheos (think he's in the UK on dialup) to MntSnow in Utah.. that got ugly

Including AMD and Intel support is a big plus with folks around here..

dpa: that is a good point. I think once we can gather up some people to get this project going I will make an IRC room and have that be our "headquarters" and "chatroom" to make the distro

Vass: as far as getting it distributed I think I could host at my work and if the project went well and I have belief that it could take off in the TIMO area, I wouldnt even mind paying for a few hosts to let people dld it.

Plus I wasnt thinkin about a full blown distro. I was more thinking a "starter pack" such as: A webrowser with java and flash installed A chat program for chat mediums. A program for reading and editing text... so on and so forth.... I think the most confusing thing for a newb in linux is there are 987987978 different progs that do the samething. start them off with no choices so they can learn Linux first. then get them to try different progs when they are comfy.

IMO

Ya I think a starter pack would be great something can could serve to the newbies(me) and all so have power for the people that know what they are doing(that will never be me).

How about making 2 distros?

One for all the newbies out here who don't know "which is the easiest to use, etc."

and one for all the advanced linux guys as well..?

jmoore: that is an excellent Idea although I would like to stay focused in the newbie section first. Once we pull that distro out of our ummm shall we say "ears" then maybe we could branch to another distro in the future. I have been informed that making a distro is not a very easy task what-so-ever, and I wouldnt want to try to make two at once to make it that much more difficult. If we get a starter pack ready for the newer people of linux. More than likely the "experts" in linux will take that and make themselves a package.
