ASUS A7N8X Deluxe

Grrrr..... after all the problems I had earlier this year trying to get my CD writer to work with my new ASUS A7N8X Deluxe motherboard, it still doesn't work.

Bought a new ASUS CRW5224A writer the other day, thinking that buying a drive from the same manufacturer would pretty much ensure no compatibility issues - still has the same problems. After further checking, I've discovered that WinXP is detecting ALL of my drives as SCSI devices, even the hard drives. Wouldn't bother me, but I know damn well that they're IDE. I've emailed ASUS technical support, not much help so far.

My suspicion is that it's something to do with the onboard RAID, since it won't let me access the menu for that on system bootup - just comes up with two numbers, I hit enter a few times and it continues booting up.

Please tell me that someone has a suggestion, or has had this problem before.... cos otherwise I'm gonna be screaming before much longer!

the raid setup on that board is only for ata-serial. There is a jumper on the board to turn off so it won't try to boot from it during boot. Do you have an extra ide controller card on the system? I do, and it shows my drives as SCSI. this is normal.
Post some more of your specs and we'll see if we can help.

Nope, no extra controller card. Here's my specs:

Asus A7N8X Deluxe Mobo
512MB PC2700 DDR
Athlon XP 2000+
Western Digital 80GB 7200rpm drive w/8MB cache - Primary IDE Master
Maxtor 20GB drive (old one from my previous system) - Primary IDE Slave
Generic DVD-ROM - Secondary IDE Master
Asus CRW5224A CD-Rewriter - Secondary IDE Slave
Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro Atlantis

Think that's everything, well there's my Hansol TFT monitor but I don't reckon that counts for much

Don't suppose swapping the CD/DVD drives round so the writer is the master and the DVD the slave would make much difference, would it?

I might change the jumper for the RAID at some point also, as it's unlikely I'm gonna come by a Serial ATA drive any time soon :P

Cheers for any help you can provide

Which nForce chipset drivers are you using and did you install the "enhanced" IDE drivers? I had a similar problem trying to burn a CD with Exact Audio Copy on my "SCSI" IDE CD/RW and reverting to the default MS IDE drivers fixed it. Been working fine ever since.

The Asus provided nForce drivers (v1.6) are actually newer than the nVidia v2.03 ones and are optimized for the A7N8X which has a custom MCP-T Southbridge.

You guys were right, changing the drivers has worked, I now have a working CD writer It's probably just my imagination, but other parts of the system seem to be operating better now too
