Kids Is Windows 2003 Worth It?

Hello

As you se im new on this site
Im liking it, it seems like the ppl here care for the "newbies"
I hope I make good friends as well...

Well to the subject, is Windows Server 2003 worth the try?
I dont have actually a server, I use I desktop only but I want to try this server OS because of the security, but it it worth it if I dont actually have a server

Im actually a Windows user but I have used Linux too
IMHO Linux is still too complicated to me as well as support for like games and software is very low (I tried Suse 8.1 btw)

So for now Im still going to stay in the "MS" world....

thanks for the attention

IMO Server 2003 is a very good OS. I was running it for a ew weeks and thought the networking stabilityand over all stablility was alot better than windows 2000 when I was at a LAN with my friends gaming and shareing files.

So I say yea give it ago, im sure you'll like it

Oh and Welcome to TechIMO

Send a message via ICQ to Agent_Embryo
It could be a bit pricy for home users, couldn't it?

I beta-tested for a while, and I really liked what I saw.

Not sure if you'd want to wipe out a system to to work with it though depending on your purposes.

If you do any serious gaming, games may have some compatibility issues with it still and video card drivers won't be optimized for it.

Considering its a server, designed with server purposes I don't see any reason to upgrade unless you're coming from like Win98 or something
But from XP to 2003 definately save your $$$
IF you take a little time you can lock down XP just fine.. just have to shut off a few hundred services

Hmm yes actualy im not sure of the price, but I know its alot, so it will not actualy be worth it of your just a home user.

For what its worth, I have played all my useual games on server and they ran just fine, Morrowind seemed a little slower then on win2k.

Well, the price isnt an issue...
I know its a lot! but my fathers job gave one copy for free so I have the CD in my hand
The issue is if it is worth for a Home user? Yes I play some games, but im not a game monster

BTW, Can I find drivers for my Nvidia Geforce 2 to work in 2003?
If I dont then I will skip to install it and stay were I am

But I heard that the stability and the security is outstanding so...
and I come from W2K, which is also very good (better than XP IMO, less bloatware, eye-candy, etc)

Well, thanks for all the responses! you ppl are really good at it!

thanks for the attention

I'm sure you can get drivers for the GF2 for Win2003.. If nothing else, the XP drivers should work fine since server 2003 started out as XP server.

I think by default it'll install a bunch of stuff you'll want to turn off for a desktop, like DHCP and DNS serving, IIS, MSDE, etc.

From my experience, unless I did something wrong, the drivers that are installed with the OS work no better than the latest and greatest. I would not recommend this OS for gaming. That is the ONLY reason I gave it up. I wanted to play some games and it was not compatible.
