What Do I Need to Know About CPU HSF Units?

How can I tell if the HSF unit I'm buying is compatible with my CPU? Some say "for P4 2.8 GHz and higher." Does that mean I can't use that unit for, say, a 2.4 GHz CPU? Thank you for your time.

Also, when it says "2.4 GHz and higher," how much higher? I used a Cooler Master DI4-7H53D and, according to Oupost.com, it supports Northwood 2.4 GHz and higher, but I used it on a 2.66 GHz processor and it automatically shut down my system in less than a minute. I checked the HSF and it was really hot. I'm guessing that it shut down automatically, sensing that the CPU was getting too hot, but I'm not an expert so I wouldn't know. Maybe it was my motherboard: it's an ECS L4VXA2.

Are you sure you're reading correctly, usually the fans state it this way:
'Up to <specified MHz rating>', not 'from <specifid MHz> to upwards'.

At least I haven't seen any fan like that.

//edit:
Says here ->
http://www.coolermaster.com/products...di4-7h53d.html

that is supports willamette up to 2.0GHz and northwood up to 2.8GHz.

Did you connect the fan to the mobo so it would spin up?

Well... I didn't use Cooler Master's website. I checked it on Outpost.com.

http://shop4.outpost.com/product/3079259

On that page, it says "2.4 GHz and higher." And, yes, I did connect the 3-pin connector to the motherboard. Haha!

That has gotta be the stupidest thing I've seen (was going to say ever, but retracted to today).

'Requirements' for hsf? What the ****.
That looks a lot like false marketing...

Well, obviously I don't know much. Why else would I ask?

I was referring to the outpost page, not to you.

I'd recommend you check the manuf. website when buying something for more accurate specifications. And, when buying HSF, buy one that has space on the upper end too (not a hsf that is max rated very near your processor).

So that unit should be fine for my P4 2.66 GHz, right? So I guess the problem of it shutting down by itself isnt related to the HSF... any ideas anyone? It's an ECS L4VXA2 motherboard. Maybe it's the thermal compound? I used the one that came with the HSF unit.

Btw, I didn't mean to be rude when I said "why else would I ask?" I was just trying to explain that I don't know much.
