Outdoors Page Usage

Hey,

Got a good one here that has puzzled like nothing before. Windows XP with 2ghz. I have 512mb of ram, but my page file is still being used. I understand that its going to be there, but using it until necessary is a different story. I have only about 300mb at the most being used with all the programs that I could possibly run at any given time for my normal usage. The file is set to 256 min and 1056 max, which gave my page file size 755mb. Now, seeing that I don't ever use enough memory to even come close to using the swap file why is my computer still accessing it. Its slowing me down. No matter what I do my computer still accesses the swap file even if it the swap file is off(only tried that once). The swap file can be there for all I care, I just dont want my computer to use it until it really runs out of RAM. Any suggestions. Anything would help. tried the conservative swap file usage in 386eh but didn't make a difference. Set my swap file lower didnt work, even set the min and max same only made problem worse. HEEELLLPPPP!!!!!!!!! Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks ...:::TheSaint:::...

I've always thought this was just an issue with Windows that you had to deal with. I've got a setup similiar to yours and have 768mb of RAM and it still uses it's pagefile pretty heavily too. What I did to minimize it's use is to eliminate it, reboot into safe mood, sized it to 256mb and then defragged the HD. My thinking here was to at least make the page file one contiguous file instead of scattered all over the hard drive. I also have editted the registry so that XP clears the pagefile on shutdown. Again, I'm not sure if this really aids any in performance or not but I'm sure it can't hurt. One trick that I have used before is to put the swap file on a seperate hard drive (not a seperate partition but a whole seperate hard drive) so that the access times will decrease.

Unfortunately that's the best I can help you out.

Scott
