Talk First Time Installing a CPU... help

Ok, i will be building a new pc for my friend...
he has bought everything, but he doesn't know anything about building the PC.

I have build many PCs, but i've never actually installed a CPU.

they always came installed.

So I'm asking you experts for suggestions, recommendations, guides, what to do, what not to do, things to know, etc, when installing a CPU.

I need to do this right, since it's a very expensive rig.

specs:

CPU = Intel Pentium 4 / 3.0CGHz 512k socket 478 Hyper Threading Technology 800 MHz FSB

MB = ABIT IC7-G, Intel 875P chipset for Socket 478 800MHz Canterwood ATX

Thanks ahead.

Here is a little guide for you:

http://peripherals.about.com/library.../aa082402a.htm

it's quite old but it is basically the same thing!

At least with the p4's you don't have to worry about breaking the core!!

Good luck.

Just drop that baby in there! If it dosen't work, let us know!

Use some heat sink compound between heat sink and cpu. The rest is kinda automantic as it will only on one way.

The POST will tell you if you did it right...

hum well ive never installed a p4 so i dont know if its a zif socket or not but i dont think it is. do believe that a p4 has a metal cover over the top of the processor to prevent you damaging the core so basically read the mobo instructions to find out how to stick it in the socket - stick it in - put thermal on it and the heatsink - slap the heatsink on there - hope it will post

Look at the bottom of the CPU one of the edges is different from all the others. Now find an edge on the slot that matches ur CPU and VIOLA !
