Help Required

1st Post so please be nice.

I have built two systems from scratch before without problems, however when upgrading my current system with new M/B, CPU and RAM I can not load windows. Set up as follows:-

MSI K7N2G-ILSR
AMD XP2800 333FSB Barton
512MB Samsung PC3200 DDR memory
500 watt PSU
Maxtor Ultra DMA133 80GB Hard Disk
Windows XP Pro SP1

The problem occurs once the system has gone past POST and attempts to load windows xp, I get a fraction of a second of the XP splash screen, then a blue screen for a milli-second and then it starts to reboot again.

Originally I had floppy, another hard disk, modem etc attached to hard disk, but took all those off and went back to the basics above. I have tried to rehouse the RAM but no improvement and do not know what else would create the shutdown at such a late stage of the boot up.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Firstly, Hello and welcome to TechIMO!!

Have you swapped out everything onto the new motherboard (including the hard drive with XP loaded already).

If that is the case, XP would likely not boot, as it is similar to its predecessors in hating hardware change. You will need to reload XP again.

Great, I'll try that then.

I did try using a link from another thread to download the recovery console from microsoft (over 6 floppies) as originally it stated NTLDR missing, and that is now resolved, but, I did not try and reload the whole thing.

Many thanks for your quick responce, I'll try tonight and revert tomorrow with result.

The trouble with windows (as I discovered to my cost) that Windows loads certain drivers to begin with that are rather specific about the system. That is why you can't move hard drives from PC to PC. Win ME and down you can (a bit of work is involved... but that is another story!). XP will not port is you change the motherboard.

All should be well once you reload windows, and you will have a very nice motherboard to run what sounds like a pretty decent machine!

What graphics are you running?

This thing with the HD, I have like 5 ranging from 40GB upto 120GB (all of which I used on my last MB, but as none or serial ata I can only use 3 on this board), but none are blank formatted. Will it be cool just to reload windows on top, or do I need to reformat the disk ?.

On the point of graphics, at the moment I just have a GF4 MX, I want........ well lets not worry about what I want, what I think I'll get is a 9600 pro. They seem to be comming in at about GBP150-170 and that's just about in my range.

If anybody has any recommendations, then please let me know. I play quite a few games and would like to start manipulating some of my digital photos / video's.
