Computer wont start

Every time I turn on my computer, before everything fully loads I get a message that says:
"A device file that is specified in the SYSTEM.INI file is damaged.
It may be needed to run Windows.

You may need to run the Windows setup program again.
If the file is included in another software package, you may need to reinstall the software that uses the file.
VTD
Press a key to continue."

The problem is that when I DO press a key the computer restarts itself and keeps doing the same thing over and over. I'm using Windows ME. I've tried using a Startup disk and running ScanDisk but that doesn't help. I tried System Restore through the startup disk but it doesn't go before the day the problem first happened. Please help!

You need to find the exact file name and copy that file to the proper windows directory. It is probably a VXD file and not a VTD. I would get a startup floppy (Win 98) and copy the particular file to the proper directory from DOS. What is the exact file name with extention (ie. javasup.vxd)

That's all it says, VTD. And is there another way from what you said? No one that I know had WIN 98.
