cat5 cable

i was wondering if there is a different between a cat5 crossover and a cat5 patch cable? will either work to share connection? I'm trying to link 2 computers together one with win 2k and one with 98. Is this gonna work?

You need to use the crossover cable.

dangit i just spent $30 on this blasted chord. can i splice the wire and switch it up and it would work?

A crossover is for a direct connection to the two PC's. The crossover cable wouldn't be any good if you were hooking the computers up throgh a switch/hub.
