Large File

I just installed a Maxtor 40Gb hdd in an old HP brio BA 600 workstation. I used the dynamic drive overlay software so that the bios could see all the 40Gb space. No problem. I then followed the instruction to install the OS Windows 98 SE everything goes as normal then I get a message :

Either insufficent memory KRN386.exe Windowmemsise or System.INI file is too big

Start setup again
I have 128 MB RAM.
FAT 32

I went through setup again and got the same message
What do I need to do to fully install the operating system ?

Hate to say it, but it sounds like a DDO problem. Maybe it's trying to boot without letting the DDO load. Or maybe the DDO hasn't loaded properly on the 40G HDD - which DDO are you using? Some may have limits on the size of the HDD they will support.

Maybe you booted from the CD instead of the HDD, and the DDO didn't load when you installed windoze. Exactly what steps did you follow?

Cheers

Installing a new or blank Master Drive (Boot drive): This is what I did:

Insert the MaxBlast 3 floppy diskette or CD-ROM and reboot the system.

When MaxBlast 3 asks if you would like to prepare the drive for use on your system, click yes.

Note: A warning message may appear recommending to use the Windows version of MaxBlast 3. The message appears when MaxBlast detects an existing operating system on the drive. Please select "Yes" to continue.

Select your operating system (WINDOWS 98 SE), then choose easy installation for one large partition or choose advanced installation if you want to create more than one partition.

During the format process MaxBlast will prompt you to enter the Windows O/S floppy setup diskette. Insert the operating system floppy diskette and continue.

After formatting, MaxBlast will provide specific instructions on how to install the Operating System. It is very important to follow the procedure on installing the O/S. I pressed C as specified to install from the CD-ROM-WINDOWS 98 SE.

MaxBlast ain't the best of the DDO's, unfortunately, But is should work.

Not sure what the HDD size limits on it are, though - I'll hunt a bit.

Ok, another thought. Make a boot floppy (if ya don't already have one), then reformat the HDD after loading Maxblast (DDO). Should be able to boot from floppy by pressing akey after DDO loads (I think).

Once you've reformatted the HDD (one single 40G partition), reboot, and reboot from the floppy (after loading DDO). Select to allow CD-ROM support. The copy the wholw win98 directory form the CD to the new HDD partition (call the folder win98 - anything BUT windows! ). Then you should be able to run setup directly from the HDD, so that when it reboots, it'll allow DDO to load before loading OS.

Hope that works - if it don't, maybe DDO isn't loading properly for some reason.

Cheers

a:\>copy d:\win98\*.* c:\win98

Assuming D: is the CD-ROm drive (might be E: or something is your boot disk makes a virtual drive).

It would be best to createwin98 directory on th HDD first by using A:\>mkdir c:\win98

If unsure about commands, you can type help at the prompt. For each command , use the syntax command /? to get information on how to use it, eg a:\>help /?

Mickwish I copied the win 98 files as directed. Rebooted and came up with the DDO as usual and the command prompt C:\
What command do I use to install the OS from here?

Ok, easy. Just change directory to win98 by doing c:\>cd win98, then type setup.exe and it'll run a normal win setup. Form there, as long as it loaded the DDO BEFORE you loaded the boot floppy disk, it should be smooth sailing.

Hope it works well.

Cheers
