1700+ or 2400+

I have a 2400+ right now. I'm selling it to my friend and buying a new one for myself. I didn't want to spend anymore money so I was going to stay with the same chip. It's got the most overclockable potential.

Then I realized that the 1700+ overclocks like no tomorrow! Air-cooler peoples have gotton it to the same speeds as a max overclocked 2400+. So I get that these chips can overclock to about the same level.

Which one do you think I should buy?

It would suck to actualy buy a slower chip, but if I can o/c it farther....

Also, I will be running a custom built water-cooling setup.

Just because many people have theirs overclocked and you have good enough cooling doesn't mean it will overclock well with your config...it's really up to you though.

1700+ $60

2400+$80

I will probably just get the more expensive one because it's base speed is faster. More reliable i guess.

Oh geez. I was thinking that maybe there was a price difference. $20 is it? Get the faster one. There is never any guarantee that a chip will overclock.

Now if the price difference were $75 - $100+, then I'd start considering the slower chip with overclocking. But for 20 bucks? It ain't worth the headache.

isnt it a specific revision thats the most overclockable. i was reading scott wainers article in maxpc and it said something to the effect that this was a scarce chip...??

i'd go for the 2400+, its onyl an extra $20, and you're getting guaranteed speed, what if the 1700+ doesn't overclock as much as it is supposed to.

I traded my 2400 for a 1700 and am much happier

Edit: I have to admit, I did get lucky with mine and would recommend getting the faster one.

I dunno how scarse those XP1700's are that overclock that well, but let's not forget the other XP's.

For instance the XP1800, the Tbred B version of that one tends to overclock very nicely too.

I know for a fact, cause I've had mine running 16.5 x 133= 2.2Ghz
I've had it at 2.35Ghz, with 333Mhz fsb.

And recently, since I bought my A7N8X, I've even had it at 2.2Ghz/400Mhz, which is as fast as the XP3200+ supposedly.
Only thing I miss is the extra cache.

I've posted my single channel benchmark, was a very nice score, and I'm getting my new board on saturday, so all will be fine.

Trust me, ya just gotta look at the code, some indicate a downclocked high end Tbred B, like the code AIUCB, that is a high end Tbred B, and if that is on yer cpu, ya can almost bet on it that it'll give ya at least 2Ghz.

I got an XP1700+ 1.47GHZ 384K 266 Tbred B - stepping JIUHB:0319WPMW from svc.com - read their description (out of stock currently). Excaliberpc.com has 0310XPMW in stock.

Mine easily did 200x12@1.775Vcore in A7N8X dlx 2.0 and 218x11@1.775Vc in 8rda+

Not too shabby 1.47Ghz@2.4Ghz (almost 1Ghz o/c on air, I'm sure I can break 1G by tweaking a bit) for $58 bucks, sure beats spending almost $500 for a 2.2Ghz 3200+
