cygwin will run in windows, but is only 'linux-like' (read their webpage for details).
Knoppix will run in place of windows, if the PC can boot from CDR (and you can boot from floppy and run from CDR even if the PC can't boot CDR).

(EDITed 'bnoot' to make it read boot /EDIT)

I think what you are reffering to is one of:
Dragonlinux: http://www.c-cubedinc.com/dragon/index.shtml
Winlinux: www.winlinux.net
phatlinux: www.phatlinux.com
These aren't as great as they sound as they use the UMSDOS filesystem (to allow *nix permissions and filenames under FAT) and it is really slow.
So don't judge Linux by them. It isn't always slow, but that filesystem provides a real bottleneck.

I have knoppix, debian and redhat 8 all running in windows under virtual pc they all run fine but it's a little slow, although that's to be expected I guess.

Ah, thats a different thing though, similar idea to VMware, with those distros I posted, I think you still need to erboot or use loadlin. They also won't work with NTFS for that reason.

cygwin was only ever really meant to provide a linux-like command line environment within windows. therefore, there's no real gui for it.

i would suggest you dual boot if you'd like to experiement with linux but not get rid of windows totally.

why not load a live eval CD?
Suse, Slackware, Knoppix (and a few others) all offer live evals that let you tinker and store configs without installing.

If you run a virtual machine (vmware) you will still need to isntall the distro, meaning you will still need the HD space.

If you are really cramped for space then I would suggest you check out a live eval CD and just use the ability to store the config files and such on your HD, those would take up minimal space.
