hi there i have 2 computer i have finaly got my hands on some cross over cable and have conected them together. i am pritty sure i have the right drivers installed for each network card and they both have win xp............. i have used the networking wizard and not much has happend............ i have tried to ping them in comand promt but nothing and i am always getting the message "Network cable is unpluged".............. HELP
Firstly, are you sure it is a crossover cable and not a straight-wired cable. Don't mean to insult you or anything, but that would cause this problem.
If it is, then set the IP/subnet mask manually.
Set one to 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0 and the other to 192.168.0.2/255.255.255.0.
Try pinging then.
Check the info in device manager. See anything odd there?
Also check that your nics don't have a switch on them to physically change to crossover. Ie. you can use a straight cable but switch the nic to crossover. This would have the effect of cancelling out your crossover cable.
none of them have swiches on them and the cards i am using is a SIS 900 and a Via onboard chip......... it is on the motherboard ASROCK K7VT2...... i am going to try and put a spear SIS 900 card in that but any surgestions other wise might help
well they both see each other but i can't get them to network together. i am using the XP wizard and the disk thing but with no luck ........... also when i ping them in DOS i get "time out" on all the attempts............ help
OK, I don't have an XP machine right here, but I believe you need to go to the properties of your "local area connection", choose TCP/IP and select properties, then I think there is an "advanced" tab. The option may be there. Either way look around in the local area connection properties, its there somewhere.
