Firstly, are you sure it is a crossover cable and not a straight-wired cable. Don't mean to insult you or anything, but that would cause this problem.
If it is, then set the IP/subnet mask manually.
Set one to 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0 and the other to 192.168.0.2/255.255.255.0.
Try pinging then.
Check the info in device manager. See anything odd there?

Also check that your nics don't have a switch on them to physically change to crossover. Ie. you can use a straight cable but switch the nic to crossover. This would have the effect of cancelling out your crossover cable.

No need to change your ip addresses, internal addresses will work just fine.

But I would too check if the cable is really a crosspatched cable, and then see if the nics are enabled in bios (if windows shows them, they are )

Did you turn off XP's built-in firewall?

OK, I don't have an XP machine right here, but I believe you need to go to the properties of your "local area connection", choose TCP/IP and select properties, then I think there is an "advanced" tab. The option may be there. Either way look around in the local area connection properties, its there somewhere.
