System will not power up

I was happily surfing the web when suddenly all power goes off and I'm left with a blank screen. The weird thing is, my monitor/router/speaker/cable modem are still intact.

I thought it was a power outage in my area but all the other electronics in my house were fine.

Now I can't even boot into BIOs; no led power lights, no live fans, no beeps.

I have never fried my processor before so I don't know if it's fried. The core looks fine to me and I don't smell anything burnt.

I also made sure the power led is connected properly to the button.

I tested the outlet to see if there were any problems but all other electronics work, including the power bar that was used.

So either my mobo is fried or my case power supply is dead. What else should I check?

System specs:
Abit KT7 Mobo
AMD Athlon 1.2ghz @ 1.4ghz
Ati 9500 Pro
384MB SDRAM PC133
160gig HDD 5200rpm
SB Live
LG Burner

My guess is would be your power supply is dead. You can test it by jumpering pins 3 and 4 (With clip up and 3 and 4 from the left they should be Green and Black)on the power connector for the motherboard. If it starts up then it would be your motherboard.

in all likelihood, it is your PS.

swap it out with a test unit...if you don't have a spare handy, borrow one from a friend...

I'm going to swap my power supply; just waiting for a friend to bring one over.

I just took out the power supply and noticed it was 250W. I think that's a bit low for my system. no?

Well I just swapped my PS 250W with a friend's PS 230W and all fans/lights worked and I was able to get into BIOS.

So I guess my PS 250W is dead. It's weird though, because the 235W is much older than my 250W.

What factors causes PS die??? I wanna know so I can better take care of it. I know I was recently overclocking the processor and video card, is that a big factor?

Also what PS would you guys recommend for a system like mine???

It's confirmed, the 250W PS is dead. I put it in another case and it doesn't work.

age isn't always a reliable indicator for reliability (pun intended)...the factors include:

- load on PS
- environment (dust,room temperature,etc)
- quality of PS components
- last but not least...quality of external power

sounds like in your case, it was the last condition (and it is the most common one...)

Its great to hear that you got your system up and running But JUst an advice I would go out and buy another PSU that is atleast 350 watts-400 watts because your system will burn that PSU in no time You have your CPU OCed and you have a power hungry Videocard 160gb hd Plus other stuff that needs power Not to mention fans SO just like the 250watts being dead that 230watts is no match

heheh just my 2 cents :P
