Gaming Seemingly simple math problem...HELP!

Hey guys...real quick I got a problem here at work. I work for an appraisal company and a lot of what I do is drawing floor plans of houses from the appraisers hand sketch or off of plans and specs. When they are from blue prints...it's always been in the 1/4 scale. Meaning 1/4" = 1' I got a set of plans in front of me that is using a scale of 1" = 4' ???

Now...is it just me or are those two scales the same? I mean if you took the 1/4" = 1' and multiplied everything by 4...then you'd get 1" = 4' right? And vice versa...if you took 1" = 4' and divided everything by 4, you'd get 1/4" = 1'

Problem is...if I use the same scale on my trusty Engineer's Scale (the 40 scale), the measurements aren't anywhere near close! For example, the Deck is 12' wide...but when I measure it on the 40 scale it says around 7'?!?!?!

I'm fairly sure...that someone screwed up and just put the wrong scale down for these plans, it apparently isn't in the 1/4 scale. Anyways...it's drives me nutz when I can't figure something like this out...but I'm pretty sure it's not me, least not this time. lol.

you a definately right, my guess would be that the guy who drew up the plans screwed up the scale,...... you really can't trust other people to get things right! = /

Don't you want to use the 1:48 scale?

1/4" x 48 = 1'

That's using a 12 pt scale...I'm using an Engineer's or 10 pt scale.

And as far as the sketch goes...almost all of the measurements are given to me...almost all of them. And that's where I'd use my trusty scale to figure out the length of the line. I can't guess on something like this...I need to KNOW what the length is. Square footage on someone's house is not something you guess on! lol.

Talk Eureaka!

Found out what the problem was...don't know why this didn't occur to me in the first place.

These plans are on normal 8x11 paper...not blueprints. Someone reduced the plans in order to make them fit on the paper and that totally screwed up the scale. lol.

Granted that still doesn't really help me with the measurements that I need...but at least now I know WHY the measurements didn't come out even though they used the same scale.

Uggghhh. Is it Friday yet? lol.
