Folders called "found" on win2k?

I have a machine that runs win2k prof and is only used for the internet surfing and viewing photos saved to the hard drive. I noticed I have a few folders called "found.001", "found.002", etc. Inside these folders are files called "file001", file002, etc. I am sure this is not right. Does anybody know what they are or how I got them? I could not find anything on M$ site.

I think they are form the result of a scandisk. When Win XP finds errors on the drive it puts them into those folders.

Like I said I've seen this with XP but not with 2000 maybe it does the same thing.

Do you think it is safe to delete them?

Yes, it is, but they were files recovered from errors on the HD. If you can figure them out, you might be able to re-name them and use them if you need to.

Unless you have files which are missing (like pics you knew you had, but can't find), it's probably fine to delete the files.

Scandisk will create these files/folders after an OS crash or improper shutdown routine, so they may just contain stuff like web cache files, and temp files created when opening apps that weren't properly shut down in the event of a crash.

If you haven't missed any files, and don't recall losing important work due to a crash, then by all means delete them and save space.

Cheers
Mick
