FX or Radeon
Gotta conundrum that needs some solvin'.
Going to upgrade from GF2ti to ????
Hate to be on a tight budget, but I don't want to spend money for a small upgrade in graphics, but I'm looking for a new video card for $100 or less. I do play games mostly with the computer it's going into, so that is more of an issue to me than VIVO, etc options.
Seems like the best bang for the buck is the Abit Siluro FX 5200 ( $77 at Newegg. )
Asus makes a VIVO card for 109 which I like , but again, it's just the FX 5200 ( NV35 )....both with 128 mb of DDR ( I currently have 64 ).
I want a DX9 card, and I'd love to get an FX5600, but they are currently out of my range.
Of course, I'm open to all suggestions and the arguments for and against either getting a DX9 card, or finding a cheaper GF4 or Radeon card that will give better performance in games.
I guess if push comes to shove, I might be able to throw another hundo at it if it is really worth doing, but I'd have to wait a month to do that.
What's everyones thoughts on the cards they have, the cards they want, the cards they've read up on and are going to get, even if it costs them a kidney?
BTW, I plan on OC'ing the 1700+ I just ordered from NewEgg yesterday....I figure I got the KR7a, I might as well us it, right?!

I got my Asylum FX5200 for $79 (after $20 instant rebate). Except for the lousy drivers that came with it, it's a great card. A quick trip to NVIDIA's web site got me the new FX drivers and all is well. Great card for the price. I personally don't find it lacking for what I do.

FX5200 sucks!!!!!! Please don't buy it!!!!
At least for games it sucks.
Geez, a good gaming card for less than $100 is going to find I think. I would go with a GeForce 4 maybe? ti 4200 64MB version is $85.
If you shell out another $20 go for the Radeon 9500. I found it for $118 on pricewatch. That card is DirectX 9 compliant (like the GeForce FX's) and is a great performer.

That's what I was looking for. I know the FX is basically the DX9 version of the MX cards, and I bought the GF2ti over a GF4MX for that very reason....I've been extremely pleased with the performance of my titanium card ( one strange glitch that required a driver reinstall has been the extent of my problems ).
I'm not so much worried about actually finding the best price for the card somuch that I'm interested in what's worth spending the money on.

GFX5200 is a POS if you want to do gaming.
That GPU is slower than a GF4 Ti4200!!
I have a GF4 Ti4200 it runs good on gaming with my 1700+ OC'd to 2.25ghz.
But since you want DX9, I don't know what you might get. maybe spend a little more.

What's with all the bashing of the FX5200? Get a grip. I have a PNY GeForceFX 5200 Ultra. It performs FLAWLESSLY on games such as unreal 2, breed, ut2003, generals, you name it. It is an excellent card.

SocceRich, what exactly do mean performs flawlessly? It doesn't crash, you can actually see the game?
The card may beable to play the games, but when a card that came out almost a year before it, BEATS it, the card is a scam.

I have an FX 5200 and it runs BF1942 just fine. I run in 800x600x32 in highest detail and it still has that nice smoothness to it |

When I say flawlessly, I mean under the highest settings, there are no crashes, no screen glitches, no slow downs, nothing. And the FX was designed for games that were designed for direct x 9.0. Once the 9.0 games come out I think we shall see the fx 5200 become more useful. It runs 8.0 games just fine too. You can give me all the stats and benchmarks you want, but the FX 5200 doesn't suck. It may not be the best, but it sure doesn't suck. It's not a POS, and I see no reason why you all insult the 5200, when there are crappier cards out there.
