Dv Movies from Digital Camera

Hi, I have a Sony DSC-P75 Digital still camera. It has a movie option with audio that I use often. I can play back the movies I make with the camera on my iBook in Quicktime just fine, with sounds. I export the movies, which are MPG to a DV stream so I can use them in iMovie to make some...well, movies. I have to do this since iMovie does not accept MPG files. Problem is I loose the sound from the MPG when I export them. Why is this? Is there a utility I can use to extract the audio from the MPGs off the camera so I can place them in iMovie easily. So far I've been playing the movies in quicktime and recording the audio back into the mac by holding small speakers or headphones over/near the built in mic and then inporting that audio file into iMovie. It works but I think there's got to be a better way. Any suggestions
