knoppix nob questions

Well I've been tinkering with my knoppix cd a bit and after a few snags have kinda set it aside. One thing is I have one of those dreaded win only modems and can not find Linux drivers but I've still been having fun.

So my first questions is would there be any issues related to installing this on my hdd for my other box? and setting it up as a dc seti box? and once i do can I somehow use ics to share my connection? or how would i go about networking the two machines? Internet sharing is not a must just a plus as I would more than likely need it for setting up Seti. my win98se machine would be my main box.

I also had the same question found in this thread for once IO do get a modem that will work one this machine http://www.techimo.com/forum/t72666.html

you don't actually "install" knoppix. it's a cd only distro that runs with your ram. in fact, i was running it on a system i was testing that had no hard drives last night. if you want a distribution that you can acutally install, i suggest you check out redhat or mandrake.

as for setting it up, both redhat and drake are easy to set up and use. you can download a seti client from the seti project site, along with instructions on how to set it up.

as for ics, what i believe you need to do is set up the ics thing on your windows box and then connect your linux box to it, preferibly with a nic. i would reccomend you get a small router and do it that way. i don't know enough about ics to help you out more, but i am sure others here can help you.

Actually you can install knoppix to your HD. Here are instructions.

Take it away Josh.

You can install knoppix.

As far as drivers for your modem, what modem do you have.
Post the model and chipset and ill see what I can dig up for you.

There shouldn't be any issues getting things up and running.
I would suggest you set up ICS on the Win 98 box and then use a crossover to connect the 2 machines and then you wont need to worry about getting that modem running or any other networking equpiment if you dont have it around.

As far as ICS on the linux box, you can set that up, but you will need to get then modem working then set it up.
There is a great PET over on linuxjunior detailing it.

It takes a bit of work, but if you dont have a NIC in the linux box or want to give it a shot, it should work.

I'm not that much of a newbie..

The reason for using knoppix is I'm a linux newbie and don't want to jump in with both feet, and I've been tinkering with knoppix for a few weeks. So I thought it would be the best way to go.

I have the box I want to use set-up and networked already. So set-up that up is done. I have a Router/switch nic the works. My main question on the ICS was rather or not there would be any problems/snags sharing from my win98 machine and it sounds like no. The only reason for the share or to have them networked is gettin wu's for seti ect.

I've already looked for the drivers for the modem and didn't find them. However since its in my main box there's not much need as I'm not planning on swapping it out. But the modem is a pctel 56hp92-pct from best data. I don't ahve the chipset info right this sec but I'll try to get them.

thanx for the links guys I'll give it a try and see what happens and post back. Hopefully I can get by with lil or no snags

No problems whatsoever Windows wont care where the packets are coming from if you use ICS, it will just forward them along. Nor will it care if you mount shared folders.
