Systems unable to install win98


need some help here, don't want to pull out my hair. i have partitioned and formated a pc that had win NT 4.0 i followed the steps to install the cab files in a directory on the hard drive but when i get to where is says install win98 C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS>SETUP /IE, I get setup initialize
setup is now going to preform a routine check on your system to continue press enter. i get C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS>. If i type in setup /ie i get the same message. what am i doing worng

First of all...Welcome to the forums!

Can you just install from the cd??


I think what you wanted to do..instead of copying the "C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS" to a directory on the hard drive.....was copy the "Win98" folder to the hard drive.

Once you boot and go to the win98 folder ...THEN do C:\win98>SETUP /IE

The /IE switch creates an emergency startup disk.

Cant see the point of that, as it asks you during installation if you want to create one anyway...

IMO John P hit your problem on the head that you copied the wrong folder files to your HD.

i start the pc with the startup disk. when the windows menu appears in insert the cd press 1 the i get error reading drive a hit any key get diagnostic tools loaded, file not found at a promt i type setup get bad file name

In your BIOS, is your virus protection turned off? This can often halt an installation.

Also, check your Private Messages (PM)
