Win2k okay but is on a distinguished road
DVNT1 - Thanks for the link to tlist - I didn't realize it was a downloadable utility. Will go get it and try again for meaningful info.

Mortis - I have cable modem connection too, running through a little Linksys NAT, and disabling svchost for the net did not affect my Internet access. The NAT might make that difference, I guess.

Is that a problem?

Cody - What are the implications of holding Port 1025 open? If the program should be blocked because of Port 1025, do you know a way to cancel the svchost error message that always pops up on boot when it is blocked (on my system, anyway)? thanks -

port 1025 and 1026 is typically for Active Directory logon and directory replication interface (opened by RPC).

Also see http://www.giac.org/practical/Alan_McClelland_GCNT.doc for details.

Directory replication

DVNT1 - Would directory replication be used on my home office LAN to make shared directories visible on the other machines? - that's just a guess, of course. But otherwise, what legitimate use might be involved in letting svchost connect to either local net or Internet? I'm still trying to figure out what it's good for...

no, this would be for the Active Directory store.

I doubt there are any reasons with the Internet. May not even be a need for it on a home LAN, but I really don't know.

Recently when the generic host process runs it dials up my modem and establishes an internet connection all by itself.

It does this everytime my son plays one of his games. I've disabled all automatic update programs that I could found. I've reloaded windows. I'm able to stop this behavior by using ZoneAlarm but this generic host process is occasionally needed to connect to certain websites.

Any suggestions about what to do?

Thanks.

I don't like the sound of that.....
Probably makes you feel like your computer is a bot.
