file sharing in winXP

ok... We just got a new computer in our lab at school. It is a winXPpro box. It is attached to the network and can see and access all of the other computers (win98 or win2kpro boxes), but for some reason, those computers cannot access the new winXP machine...

can someone refresh my memory as to how to make sharing available on these an XP computer? I don't want to just enable the guest account... I want them to have to login as a specific username if possible...

thanks
-Z

For one, XP Pro has simple file sharing enabled by default. You will want to turn that off. Once you do that then sharing drives is similar to W2K.

Is you lan a domain or workgroup?

You can do this under Folder Options > View (It's the last check box in the list)

you will need to do the same user/pass thing, that will usually solve the problems. also make sure that the folder you're trying to share has "everyone" permissions.

for the 98 machines, you MIGHT need netbeui off an xp cd.

He means that if you make a user name on the win2k or 98 machine with the exact same username and password as is on the windows xp pro machine, you shouldnt get any "access denied" problems when trying to access a folder

alright.. this is just driving me crazy.

I'm going to go into explicit detail here to see if anyone can solve my problem.

I have winXPpro installed on a new computer here and the computer is named 'jwayne'. there are 2 accounts on the computer. ADMINISTRATOR and GROUP. the ADMIN account has admin capabilities. the GROUP account has restricted capabilities.

I have shared a folder on the computer called DATA. I want members of GROUP to be able to read and write to this folder over the network from their various computers.

something is funny with the way our building is set up in terms of the subnetting. 'jwayne' is on the 2nd floor (subnet xxx.xxx.83.xxx) and cannot see the other computers in its workgroup (MRW) that are on the first floor (subnet xxx.xxx.84.xxx) when the "entire network" option is selected in network neighborhood. in fact, the computer pretty much hangs when you try to do this and just freezes. I think that there is something wrong with the WINS server, but I have no control over this and cannot find the person who does anyway.

keeping all this in mind... if I am sitting at my computer, I can open a folder and type \\someotherComputerName and connect to that computer with no problem. HOWEVER, I can NOT connect to the computer 'jwayne' in the manner.

and this my friends is the whole darn problem. I need to be able to connect to that computer so I can write data to it from anywhere on the network. 'jwayne' can use the internet... it can connect to other computers, etc, but it cannot be connected to. I cannot figure out what the heck that I'm doing wrong, and I seek your advice as it is a problem that I need to resolve ASAP.

thanks in advance!
