Recommend me a linux friendly inkjet (photo quality)

Ok I just got a nice new digital camera and so I am looking to get a budget InkJet to print my snaps.
  • Ideally sub £150.
    Good quality photo prints.
    Prefferably HP.
    Support for linux via cups.
Text output not a major issue as I allready have a laser.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Regards

ed

well any semi-modern hp deskjet has excellent support via cups, especially with the hpijs+rss drivers, adn the deskjet ppd, which provides nearly all services for hp's inkjets. luckily, the hpijs project provides great support for high quality printing in linux.

for you i would suggest the hp photosmart 5500, which lists on hp's uk site for £100, and there is support for hires printing in the latest version of hpijs (and cups). from hp's specs, it looks like it will print photos nicely.

hope this helps.

[edit] the latest hpijs drivers can, of course, be downloaded from here

The Epson C80/82 now works quite well in SuSE 8.1/8.2 as shipped, and can be made to work in other distributions with a little tweaking.

The HP PhotoSmart 1115 is probably no longer available but now works astoundingly well using the most recent HP Linux driver release -do not expect this to mean easy access to the onboard card readers.

may I also suggest www.linuxprinting.org

Thanks for the ideas everyone. While linuxprinting.org is certainly useful I was really looking for first hand experience from other TechIMO members. The odds of me buying an epson inkjet are slim to none

Anyway, the modern photosmart range sounds promising.

Thanks again.

Hey, I gave you personal experience. I have used the HP printers series including the 825, 845, 932, 970, and PS1115, the 970 and 1115 work quite well with the latest driver from HP, giving good color and realistic photo quality. However, while HP inkjets used to have large, high-capacity ink cartridges, this is no longer true. They have gone the way of the tiny cartridge, to get more $ because of a more frequent replacement interval.

My Canon S4500 works great with CUPS. Drake auto detected & configured it, right off the bat. Economical to run too.

Ive got an HP PSC 750xi and it worked great when I installed mandrake 9.1 (which was kind of surprisng considering i know nothing about linux, cant even figure out how to install applications and stuff).
